Heritage Rail Trail’s New Section is Now Open – Connecting the Trails.
Come enjoy an additional 1.3 miles of trail along the Codorus Creek from the Loucks Mill Rd-RT 30 parking lot to Hamilton Ave. and N George St. in the City of York.
The newest section of the Heritage Rail Trail follows the Codorus Creek 1.3 miles from U.S. Route 30 in Springettsbury Township to North George Street at the City of York’s northern limits. With the completion of this section, rail trail visitors can now enjoy 5.7 miles of continuous pathway for walking, cycling and other outdoor adventures stretching from John Rudy County Park in East Manchester Township to North George Street in Downtown York. A gap of approximately 8 blocks in York City has been marked with on-street signs to direct visitors from North George St. (near Smalls Athletic Field) to the Heritage Rail Trail’s northern trailhead at West Philadelphia Street and Pershing Avenue.

The extension’s final section, to be built in 2020, will close this gap, creating a seamless trail that runs 27 miles from end to end. When complete, the Heritage Rail Trail will run uninterrupted from John Rudy County Park south through Downtown York, and all the way to the Mason-Dixon Line. There, it already connects with Maryland’s Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail for an additional 21 miles before terminating near Hunt Valley, Maryland. Downtown Inc and the City of York are working together to complete the final section of the Rail Trail in York and planning a grand “golden spike” celebration when the final city gap is completed in 2020.
